I’m pretty certain I’ve fallen head over heels for Charley Harper once again. I’m sure many of you did when Todd Oldham’s Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life was all the rage on coffee tables across the country in 2007. But I think it’s all of those Eric Carle books I’m reading to Lena that might have reignited my love for simple shapes in pretty art.

the cuteness of lorelay bove

I took one look at Lorelay Bove’s adorable paintings for the latest Alice in Wonderland themed art show at Nucleus Gallery and I pretty much fell in love with her style. And when I tracked down her etsy shop, I knew I was really in trouble. Luckily we have no current need for Parisian/Rome artwork, but trust me that I would redecorate a room just to accomodate her adorable paintings!

For the next few Fridays, the lovely Liz of PaisleePress is hosting a “develop” photography series with the wonderful photographer Jefra Starr Linn. Each week there’s a posted assignment, a guided creativity lesson, and a chance to showcase your results via either FLICKR or Facebook. It’s the perfect way to spend the weekend working on your photography skills…

The first assignment involves taking 75 photos of one subject… and picking the best one out of all of them. Let’s hope for some great natural light this weekend!

helping the hodges

Starting today, the National Cartoonists Society Foundation (NCSF) will be launching a fund-raising auction of original art by America’s top cartoonists who donated their work to help one of their own in his time of need. In August of 2009, Matthew Hodge, the teenage son of former Disney and Veggie Tales artist Tim Hodge, was in a car accident involving a train in rural Tennessee placing him into a coma. After the initial stay in the hospital, the Hodge’s short term insurance policy wouldn’t cover Matthew’s long-term recovery at a nursing care facility, calling his coma a “pre-existing” condition.

Matthew Hodge was an A student at Page High School in Franklin, Tennessee, where he enjoyed being a part of the drumline in their championship marching band. This season, the band won their sixth consecutive Division II State Championship while Matthew’s drums were silent.

The cartooning world has rallied around Tim and his family to raise funds needed to help them through their tragedy. Over 100 artists have donated 170 items of original art from comic strips, comic books, children’s books, animation, and sculpture that will begin to be listed on eBay on January 21. The first grouping will be listed on January 21 beginning at 10am P.S.T., with subsequent listings on January 28 and February 4. All items for sale may be previewed at www.HelpTheHodges.com.

the magic of mary blair via children’s books

I’m not sure anyone can top Mary Blair as the ultimate children’s illustrator for painting pictures that both kids and adults absolutely love. That’s why it’s hard to find her work with a pricetag less than $10,000… and if you ask any collector it’s well worth it.

Baby M won’t be having any of those fancy paintings hanging in his/her room anytime soon, but we can at least share the pictures in the form of hardcover books from Disney Press. So far, they’ve released archive storybooks of Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland that feature Blair’s artwork, and in November they finally put out a Peter Pan edition! I can’t wait to add these to the storybook collection that is already amassing in the nursery — looks like I enjoy nesting via children’s books rather than clothes.

I just discovered Jon Klassen‘s artwork… and I’m slightly obsessed with all of his works right now. Especially because so many of them are available as really affordable prints ($20-60) at Nucleus Gallery.

Jenn Ski’s A-Z prints are just too cute for words… and are only $14 each for the original 4×6 artwork.

She also has really cute prints that work in all other rooms of the house… even the kitchen!
