uncommon goods are the best gifts

If there’s one store I return to each and every time I’m looking for a gift, it’s Uncommon Goods. And each time I look through the site, I not only end up with the perfect gift idea, but a laundry list of things I want for myself for my next birthday!

Seriously, it’s the one reliable treasure trove on the Internet that never ever lets you down! And what’s even better is that they’re an amazingly wonderful company as well. They pay great wages to their workers (their lowest seasonal employee starts at 150% of minimum wage!), they support artisans and hand-made goods, AND they actively support non-profit organizations as well: RAINN,
American Forests, International Rescue Committee, and Reach Out & Read! See… told you they were awesome.

But what about those uncommon gifts? Here are a few of my favorites this year:

Uncommon Gifts for Family

A Year of Gratitude: 52 Thank You cards for you to send throughout the year and tips on how to live a more gracious life!

Yard Dice: You’ve just changed how you play Yahtzee FOREVER!!!

Flamingo Away Sculpture: I’m not sure what it says about me and my friends, but I know so many people that would adore this in their yard!

Top Rated Uncommon Gifts

Major Scale Musical Wine Glasses: We already own 999 wine glasses, so Mr. M said we couldn’t have these. So that means we’ll buy them for a wine-glass deficient friend and then visit them to play wine music!

Cheese & Crackers Serving Board: A literal AMPERSAND telling you how to do happy hour the right way!

Elwood the Rainbow Unicorn Mug: How stinking adorable is this mug? It’s happy. It’s a unicorn. It’s a mug. Fill it with marshmallows and gift pure joy!

Deep Sea Sand Art:  I will never, ever stop loving these things. Ever. EVER!

Wine Pairing Towel Set: Tea towels can be bland, overly themed, or absolutely useful. These are the latter, and seem to be something that everyone can use!

Authentic Stadium Seat Cufflinks: Sports fans can be picky people. But this gift would make any fan smile! I mean, it’s portable office sports bragging memorabilia! It doesn’t get better than that!

Uncommon Stocking Stuffers

Stocking Stuffers for people with insufferable habits:

Game of Phones: If they’re on their phone all the time, buy them this party game that REQUIRES a phone to play!

Hair Tie Bracelet: For the person always sporting an old elastic hair tie on their wrist, no matter if they’re wearing formal attire.

Wine Pearls: When certain people need their wine chilled, but refuse to chill it properly, and instead just add ice cubes and pretend it doesn’t mess things up.

Stocking Stuffers for the foodies:

Make Your Own Hot Sauce Kit: You know the person who needs this. The one who is always making comments about the buffalo sauce just not having quite enough kick.

Kale and Herb Razor: I own this. It looks insanely silly, but it’s amazing. Especially for rosemary!

Avocado Hugger: For the person who loves avocado toast, but only uses half an avocado at a time.

Just plain great stocking stuffers:

Record Coasters: Most coasters are sort of lame. These are the ultimate in cool.

Super Magnetic Putty: This putty will eat a magnet. It’s the coolest Christmas morning party trick ever!

Ooma Bowl: This solves all of the first-world problems I encounter taking my chips and salsa to the couch on Sundays.

Am I right? Uncommon Goods really is just the best with unique gifts and presents… and once again, my wish list is running over!

A pretty little desk space

When I switched jobs in April, a few of my friends warned me about the impending “cubicle” situation.

“You will miss your privacy!”

“You’ll miss having your own space!”

And I did. But as my new job is in a world of cubicles, I knew I wasn’t alone. And…I figured I’d do something about it.

I decorated my cube!

ThinkGeekHoodies

If you find yourself struggling for a gift for someone, and that person is ever-so-slightly a geek at heart, just grab one of these awesome hoodies or tops from ThinkGeek.com and you’ll be loved forever!

Raise.com

You know I love a good deal… so that’s why I adore buying 2nd hand gift cards online! Last week, I checked raise.com for a Build-A-Bear gift card right before taking Miss L to the store for her birthday. In 2 minutes, I had purchased a $25 gift card for $17, had it delivered to my inbox and printed out the credit to use at the store. It’s also great to check it RIGHT BEFORE you hit submit on your shopping cart, so you can save even more money after your coupon codes and rebate offers!

skiplagged

My mom and I used a little trick when we flew to San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl. The return flights on Southwest were crazy expensive and all had at least 1 stopover. So I started pricing out one-way trips between those stopovers, I realized we could get a much cheaper ticket for a little bit longer of a layover. So we went through Las Vegas, had a crazy buffet dinner on the Strip, and went back and got on our plane. And all of that was still cheaper than paying the original fare!

Skiplagged.com basically works the same way, but takes out the headache of a million different searches for you. It does mean that you have to fly with a carry-on, but at these savings, you might just ship your luggage instead!

tsumtsumgame

Tsum Tsums.

The game (for Android and iOS). The adorable little stuffed animals. The big stuffed animals. They’re all insanely cute and I’m insanely hooked. Miss L loves to hijack my phone and asks to play it as well. There are some great tips here if you want to play and maximize your coins/points/collections.

kim’s lovely list – January 2015

Here’s a list of wonderful things I wanted to share with you this month:

The Gruffalo & The Gruffalo’s Child on Netflix

The Gruffalo is one of our favorite books in the house (we discovered after David Beckham’s recommendation of “The Spiffiest Giant in Town” on Sesame Street and looked for more books by the same author), so when we saw these pop up on Netflix this week… we all smiled. It’s a magical and lovely book, and these little movies are

2015 Paper Source Wall Art Calendar

Not only does each month have a beautiful piece of art to hang on your wall, but you also can use the outlines on the back to transform each one into file folders, bookmarks, cards, gift tags, etc. (p.s. you can also cheat and buy it in March/April for 75% off like I did last year and only miss out on 4 months of pretty)

Downsize your Starbucks … but upsize your cup

Last year, a friendly Starbucks barrista told me that I should be ordering a “grande coffee in a venti cup” instead of a “venti coffee with room for cream.” And… thus began the trend of saving $0.25 on a cup of coffee. It might not be much, but it definitely makes me feel better than I do when I’m dumping coffee into the waste bin.

Perfect Date Night Rental: Edge of Tomorrow

I’m the last person who wants to see an action movie… so it took quite a bit of convincing to get me to sit still on the couch and wait for it to start. But I’m pretty certain I haven’t stopped talking about it since! I’m not sure if it’s Emily Blunt being super kickass, or Tom Cruise kicking it up a notch and looking like he’s still 30 while destroying aliens, but it’s one heck of a keeper.

Most Used Cookbook of 2014: The Meatball Shop Cookbook

I’ve shared the success of the Gobble Gobble Balls with you here before, but seriously… this is the cookbook that keeps on giving! Miss L loves to make them, all of the recipes are insanely easy, and everything turns out absolutely delicious. The only problem is that it’s getting a little kitchen grimy from all the use, so I’d better start memorizing the recipes quickly!

2014 holiday gift guide: Kim’s Favorite Things

kimsfavoritethings

This week I’m going to sharing a few gift guides for the holidays, so I thought I’d start out with an easy one featuring some of my favorite gifts to receive!

1) Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates. We’re so lucky to have an amazing local chocolatier here in town, and luckily she ships her loveliness across the country!. 12 piece assorted box: $22

2) HOBO Lauren wallet. The perfect wallet in every way, and everyone will ask you all about it when you use it! $110

3) Microsoft Surface Pro 3. Move over old iPads, this is definitely my favorite gadget of the year! $799

4) Philosophy Bath & Shower Gel. Scented bath stuff is neat, but there’s something extra special about the flavors that Philosophy has each year that makes everyone smile. $17.

5) Riedel “O” Key to Wine Tasting Set. This year, I learned that the wine glass matters. Buy yourself a set of these dishwasher friendly glasses and you’ll learn the same lesson! $59

6) UGGs. My first pair of UGGs were requested on my Santa list in 7th grade (that’s the Christmas of 1993). Navy blue short. And 21 years later, I’m still happy for my toes to find a snuggly pair under the tree.
