my iphone fell off the roof of a car and lived to tell the tale

.
On Sunday afternoon, Mr. M, Father M, Baby M and I decided to take a drive and get some shopping done outside of the house. In preparation for the excursion, I had my big diaper bag filled with the essentials to pack in the car, along with my own personal possessions such as my iphone. As I plopped Baby M into her car seat and got myself situated in the snug backseat, I placed my iphone on the roof of the car fully intending to grab it before I closed the door.
.
Guess what? I didn’t remember to grab it. I left it there. On top of a vehicle that was soon to be moving at speeds in excess of 70 mph. Go me!
.
So when did I realize the error of my ways? That would be about 5 minutes later, as we hit the main drag and the car sped up to 40 mph. That’s when we heard a giant “thud, THUD” and looked back to see something black bounce off the trunk of the car and into the road. “What in the heck was that? I didn’t see anything in the road that we hit?” I exclaimed loudly. Three seconds later… Mr. M’s mind quickly realized what it was. “That was your phone.”  Ooops.
.
I really had no hope for it surviving. The pit of my stomach fell as I knew I had just spent $200 instantly on my silly forgetfulness… and even the prospect of getting a brand new 3G phone didn’t make things any better. We’d known people who had shattered their iphones from 3 ft up so how would there be any hope for me? So it was natural that when Mr. M made a u-turn at the next intersection in search of the phone, I really didn’t think we’d find anything but shattered glass.
.
We did a drive by and spotted the phone in the opposite lane… and Mr. M turned around once again in an attempt to retrieve the phone. When we got close, we spotted that it was sitting perfectly in the middle of the furthest northbound lane. About 3 feet away was my rubber incase protective cover. Mr. M ran into the lane once to get the phone, and then back a second time to grab the case. He jumped back in the car to hand it to me and to survey the damage.
.

.
You can see the “damage” in the photo above. Scratches. That’s it! My 1st generation iPhone flew off of a moving vehicle, bounced off the trunk and into a busy street and this is what happened.
.
We bought a lotto ticket just to see if our luck would extend into that realm, but we’re still not millionaires. Yet, I DO get to hold out on renewing our contract for the super 4th-generation iPhone that debuts this year… which is a sweet reward for passing up premature upgrades to the 3G or 3GS editions!

Wow, crazy!! Mine has a big crack on it from falling FLAT on my face, phone in hand slammed right into the ground, looking up the number of a Tiki Bar. It’s a good story when people ask, at least, and I hardly notice the crack anymore.

Yeah, crazy. mine shattered when, after thousands of drops, it fell out of my pocket in the quiet library…. just hit right on the corner and the glass shattered.
