#reverb10 – day 12

December 12 – Body Integration

Prompt: This year, when did you feel the most integrated with your body? Did you have a moment where there wasn’t mind and body, but simply a cohesive YOU, alive and present?

(Author: Patrick Reynolds)

I think I felt most integrated with my body during my pregnancy. It’s so difficult to not be overly aware of your body when it doesn’t feel like your own, especially in those last few weeks. You can’t sit up from a laying position without rolling on your side, and when you realize this, you’re perplexed even though the reason is staring up at you from your belly. It’s like you’ve lost all sense of your body but at the same time you are completely aware of every inch of it. Except for your toes.

As for that moment of “oneness” … I’d have to say it’s when my water broke before Baby M arrived. I had no signs of labor, no pre-labor contractions at all, and nothing to prep me for birth. So when my water broke, I was shocked and suddenly intensely aware of my whole self. I was pretty certain of what had happened, but I wanted desperately to confirm it with some other signal. It was a moment of zen that was only related otherwise during times of distress, like when I broke my wrist. Just a moment where time stops and you’re so focused inward that you can block out everything and focus inward.

And then, of course, I started the internal freak out… so that whole zen thing flew out the window…. but I had a moment, right?

Great post! I didn’t get to experience labor like you did, but I can somewhat relate to that oneness of your body that pregnancy brings.
