#birthdayfest2014: thursday is for the tikes

Today’s giveaway was inspired by Miss L and her current love of a certain book. As it often happens, the words “I quit” started floating around our house in recent months. They were followed by temper tantrums of stubbornness and general unpleasantness all around. So I thought of a few ways to try and work around this new mantra, and Rosie Revere, Engineer was step number one. It was a book that a fellow parent had recommended and once I flipped through it I knew it was perfect.

And thus, Rosie entered our lives and introduced Miss L to perseverance in spite of what others think. To follow through and finish and not to give up. And that path led us down more… such as finishing a virtual 5K no matter how sore our legs are nor how far away our house is… you start something then you can finish it.

And just last Sunday, when I was joking with Mr. M and threw my hands up in the air and said, “I give up!” a little voice turned to me and said, “No quitting Mommy!” That’s when I knew that the lessons were getting through and that work we were doing was paying off!

So for the little tike in your life, today’s contest winner will get a copy of Rosie Revere, Engineer!

So, dear friends, here’s how you can win the book …

1. Leave a comment below describing your favorite kid’s book with a lesson inside! (We can all learn from this set of comments!)

2. Tweet the following, “It’s #birthdayfest2014 with @kim_michelle this week! I just entered Thursday’s contest and you should too! http://wp.me/p1BHoY-1N4” and come back and leave a comment that you tweeted with your twitter handle.

I’ll draw the winner for the contest using a random comment picker on Thursday, May 8th!  May the contest odds be ever in your favor!

We’re still in the board book stage… so very few lessons and a whole lot of counting and colors. But, we just started reading “Mama, will you hold my hand?” which we picked up randomly somewhere, and I wasn’t expecting to love it so much. My 2 year old brings it over all the time now, and wiggles into my lap, and holds my hand as I start to read. I’ll remind her as often as she needs that Mama will always be there to hold her hand. :)

I love The Giving Tree. And that true love means giving your all, even if you don’t get much in return.

We are big Karma Wilson fans here. Right now we read “Bear’s Loose Tooth” nightly and talk about teeth and the importance of brushing our teeth. Even though the book isn’t about dental care it gets us talking.

So we ordered “Pete the Cat: I love my white shoes” from the scholastic book order for a friend who has a cat named Petey. Of course, we read the book while waiting to see them and pass it along, and it is now my new FAVORITE toddler book. It’s all about rolling with the punches and not getting upset when something happens. Which is brilliant for small children who cry when the lid isn’t facing the right way on their cup.

H JUST started saying, ‘I Can’t’ this week!! Seeing my husband immediately stomp out any mention of that word is awe-inspiring!! We currently have Lady Bug Girl and Bug Squad on repeat- it talks about being sorry. The Giving Tree and Pete the Cat are also personal favorites!!

1st…happy (belated) birthday! 2nd…my favorite children’s book (and actually, favorite book ever) is The Little Prince. I get something new from it each time I read it, but I think one important lesson is that “It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” A great message!

My daughter loves Pete the Cat’s new shoes book. The cat steps in all sorts of things along the way that turn his shoes different colors. The lesson is that no matter what you step in, keep going! Cute book.

Anything by Mercer Meyere. A popular one around these parts is “Just a Mess” – about the importance of keeping your room tidy!
